New PCIE 6.0…

The transition from PCI Express 5.0 to PCIe 6.0 is on the horizon, with the PCI-SIG consortium projecting the first list of tested, compliant PCIe 6.0 products to be released in 2025. This means processors, SSDs, chipsets, and graphics cards with PCIe 6.0 support could arrive later in the year, possibly alongside Intel’s Panther Lake chips.

  • PCIe 6.0 offers double the bandwidth of PCIe 5.0, with up to 256GB/s on x16 connections.

  • The spec was finalized in 2022, but product development takes time; the industry is now moving into testing.

  • PCI-SIG is also looking ahead, with PCIe 7.0 planned for 2027 and PCIe 8.0 in early discussion. Eventually, PCIe could even support optical connections.

  • However, thermal concerns remain, with signs that PCIe 6.0 might require thermal throttling to manage heat.

In short, while PCIe 6.0 products are expected by late 2025, real-world performance and cooling challenges are still being worked out.
